Not sure where to put this question but here goes.

How do you know how many octaves and electronic keyboard is? my daughter needs a stand for her's and the one she's seen says it's suitable for 5-6 octave.

Thanks :)

well an octave is eight notes ...
A 5 octave keyboard actually has 61 notes!
Question Author
Does that mean I count all the keys and divide by 8?
Question Author
Thank you Michael, she was on about 61.

Thanks to you both :)
Not quite

divide by 11. There are 8 notes and 3 flats/sharps in each octave
michaelzz, i think rocky is just trying to determine the length of a keyboard, the sharps and flats are irrelevant
michael's right

there are also a few odds n sods at each end
Surely it depends on the keyboard ? Some have more notes than others.

I'm not sure I agree with a octet being an octet. When someone plays 8 notes and calls it an octet we find they've nicked the first note from the next "octet". That can't be right. They must be septets surely.
ael

i see what you mean - if you just count the white ones! (or whatever color the ones at the front are LOL)
There are 12 semitones in an octave and therefore 12 keys in an octave; 7 white keys and 5 black keys:

C
C# / Db
D
D# / Eb
E
F
F# / Gb
G
G# / Ab
A
A# / Bb
B
black keys (sharps/flats) are between white keys, they don't impact on the length of the keyboard :-)
/When someone plays 8 notes and calls it an octet/

i thought an octet was a group of 8 musicians LOL

an octave is usually a group of notes from Doh to Doh which covers 8 notes and a few halfies in between
i see what you're getting at now OG

One octave's end Doh is another's start Doh

It took me a while as I always think in terms of 1 to 8
black keys are 2 + 3 = 5notes (1 set/octave). You need 5-6 black sets

Blimey, lol. I have no idea what you're all on about.

Thanks :)
It's not usually a problem, Rocky. A standard 88 key can sit on the same stand as a 76 or a 61. The extra just hangs out over each end.

I'm guessing you mean a normal collapsible scissors type.
