I signed up to Twitter a few months back but haven't really used it yet as I'm not sure how. Could anyone give me a few basics like when to use @ and # and how to follow someone or send them a message. Thanks.

The @ goes before someone's name ( @ST3V0UK72 is me ).

If you click on someone's name, there is a box that appears with a silhouette - if you click on that there is an option to reply directly to that person. Or, if you hover over that person's name, there is an option there to reply to a tweet. You can of course just type the @ symbol in your tweet and then the name and tweet away - does the same job (You've got to make sure you spell that person's name exactly as it appears on Twitter or it could go to someone with the same name but spelled differently).

The # symbol is for Trends #PrayforMuamba for example. Same thing - type the symbol and then spell the trend correctly and tweet away.

See you on there!
I am the same as flobadod, I joined Twitter about a month ago, but I cannot get used to using it.
I am afraid the reply from Judge Nutmeg didn't help, I am still as confused as ever
I joined some time ago and seemed to instantly have some nutters following me - found it all really odd.

I'll have a go tomorrow. Cant remember my passwords now. Also I'm on a new phone doing this message and it is quite irritating.
It took me quite a while to get into twitter but I really like it now. It was just about finding people that I like to follow then it's easy. You read what they have to say, the you can reply to it if you like. It's not necessary to be doing your own tweets if yo don't want to but I've seen some really interesting stuff that I might not have seen otherwise.
Load of tosh. Only useful for celebs to make announcements or post something to get them in the news.
........... and even having that dubious potential hardly defines it as 'useful'.
I can't see any point in twitter for my own use. Just because it exists, doesn't mean you have to use it - I feel many folk become users because they fear being left out or being seen as old-fashioned. I know I'm old-fashioned so nuts to twitter.
Just the latest fad - much like Fiends Reunited or The Voice.
It will eventually be bought out by by an ailing media company desperate to 'modernise', falter and eventually collapse.
History repeats itself.
It is so full of spam and virus links for you to peruse at your peril that I rarely use it apart from following a few friends who use it regularly
