Are coffins made of solid wood or a cheaper cut of wood with a veneer of a more expensive one on top?

That would depend on the price one is willing to pay, like anything else, you pay for quality.

Exactly, you get what you pay for.

You can have a cardboard coffin if you want one.  If you specify a plywood coffin with a mahogany veneer, that's what you get.

I thought the Pope's casket was very tasteful, a beautifully made cedarwood dovetailed box.
Interestingly, the pope had 3 coffins - a cypress one, then that was put into a lead one and then finally into an elm one.
oh I see, so the one we saw was elm, or was that the cypresse?

It'll be a cardboard one for me then! 

What's the point in spending all that money for something you're only going to lay in for a week - then be incinerated?
