how does the system in petrol stations work? is it a simple computer relaying the figures from the pump to the tills or is it something more complicated?

I would imagine it is as you suggest, simple computer relaying.

After all, when you go in to pay, they ask you the number of the pump, they key it in & verify the price.

what else could it be, pray tell? little goblins with post it notes scrambling from pump to pay point? telepathic cashiers?

sorry, i don't mean to be so facetious (well...). i'm just genuinely intrigued as to what else you thought it could be.

I understand what your saying toby19. I also wonder what goes on at the pump. Does the price you pay relate to the last drop that comes out of the pump or the other end of the hose where I assume a meter is. Me being Scottish takes me back to three guys sitting in a pub...all with a fly in their pint. The Englishman says "Oh my god!!" goes back to the bar and demands another pint from the subservient bar person. The Irishman however picks out the fly, throws it on the floor and carries on drinking his pint. The Scotsman however picks out the fly and starts to squeeze it over his pint, muttering...spit it oot ya wee thieving Ba?*&^d
LOL Alan!
