You have air locks in your system. To get rid of them, you need to 'bleed' your radiators. Any hardware store will sell you a bleed key, and explain how to use it. It's very simple - you simply open the valve of each radiator to let the air out, but be careful, when the air has all been bled, water follows, so be ready to shut the valve quickly, and make surew you have an old cloth between the valve and the wall to avoid dirty water staining your paint or paper. Start on the ground floor, work your way up, and make the bathroom radiator, if you have one, the last one - if not, make it the radiator nearest the hot water tank. You may need to do this a couple of times, with a few days in between, but it should solve the problem.
It actually sounds like the pipes have not been properly secured when fitted. Air locks will cause some radiators not to warm up and in my opinion you do not have an airlock.
I've had a similar problem in the past that was solved by bleeding the radiators.  If the system has not been bled for a long time, it could take some time to let the air out of each radiator, but do not be tempted to open the valve too far as the water can soak a small cloth quickly and splash on the carpet.  An old hand towel works well.

Thanks very much everyone - i will give these a go - and hoopefully will get an undisturbed nights sleep
We have the same problem caused by scale in the system. When it builds up to a certain level at the pump and 3 way valve, the system knocks. We don't want to pay out for a powerflush, so periodically we drain down the whole system and re fill it adding new inhibitor which solves the problem for another winter. I know that mine is not airlocks or loose pipes becaus we have explored those possibilities
