What is the best way to find the best company for the job?

Should I just rely on 'word of mouth'?

Don't just go for the cheapest. We had patio doors at our other house (newly built) but we had burglars who tried to lever the patio door, easily done, our alarm went off and foiled them. Look for a reputable company and ask questions.

Thanks Gran...we plan to get them for next summer but looking through the yellow pages isn't really much help.

Creating new opening etc.

.............. just what I was going to say ButchMan ........... :o)
Wickes sell patio-doors quite cheap; it,s done with one large sheet of glass with the smaller wooden windows fitted on top. If you want one with independent frames in will be more expensive. The doors are empty of glass. The doors are put in ,then the glass windows are fitted in.
we got ours done by Anglian. At the time (not sure if still true) they didn't have bulders, they had approved partners who came and made the hole and did any reinforcing etc. A good professional job. We wanted to keep the bricks as they are not standard pattern so they cleaned them up and stacked them as they took them out.

Thanks for that...builder it is.

At the moment it's a square bay window. Well sort of....one side is square and it then joins the neighbours. Does that make sense?
Patio doors are so easily available now online .......... made to measure. If you have a good builder you can trust, I'd go with that.

Cool...that makes it much easier. Know lot's of builders. Thanks everyone :-)
Cromwell Windows
Chaucer Street.............that's where we got ours for Romany Road. :o)

Chaucer street...is that Kinsley?
Yup.
Last street of Poets corner..............going away from the W'Elephant.
WE have just had patio doors by Anglian and a good professional; job. Takes about 6 weeks as doors are made to measure not squeezed into the hole as some cheaper ones are. Has anti-lift incorporated which makes it a bit securer. One thing don't accept first price as they will come down, we waited 5 days and they called back with a better price.

I think they are still there Jack...will have to have a drive past.

Higgis...how much did it cost if you don't mind me asking?
I'd buy them on-line and pay the day rate for a builder. Window and bedroom fitters etc really p!ss me off as they all try it on with the price.
I arranged for a quote for a canopy to run the length of my house and the original quote was over £3000..............after a lot of phone calls I beat them down to £1800 and they still made a profit.
If I want a job doing now I always buy the product and get the builder in at £100 a day.
Get some personal reccomendations from neighbours, family, friends etc.
Craft .... Where do you get a builder in from at £100 a day ...?
Craft, you can get a builder for £100 a day? I probably wouldn't trust anybody that cheap.
