I have a lovely brass door knob and knocker, or so I thought. Have been at them with the Brasso and nothing! they seem to be coated in a protective coating, if that is the case why are they looking jaded. Do I need a new knob?

OMG, my mind just kicked into overdrive Mam

Every knob joke I could think of is threatening to burst forward with a level of comedic aggression never seen before!! :)

I knew you couldn't resist little trump!

Bobjugs did not mean to distract you, glad you have recalled some funnies though♥
Well that caught my attention : )
If you look after your knob, it will last you a lifetime like mine has : )

They are usually sprayed/coated with a lacquer .. acrylic or poly .. they get tarnished under the lacquer layer.
To get this off without scratching, you will need to scrub/wipe off with some Standard Thinners .. like bodyshops use.
You could try nail varnish remover too, but it's not so effective.
When cleaned off, you can polish.
Question Author
Oh comedic aggression , that sounds quite entertaining.LOL
your knob doesn't need brasso if its imitation, it needs a drop of washing up liquid and good vigorous rub should bring it up nice and shiny.
Question Author
Allbags ever practical, I have no thinners, would TCut do it? Yes I treasure my knob after all it's the first thing people see and they make judgements don't they.
Question Author
maggie as I am a little arthritic maybe I should get someone in to do the vigorous rubbing?
Mam, if you want to make sure your knob looks healthy and impresses people then, rub it vigorously for at least five minutes a day, use proper knob cleaner, make sure it gets plenty of air, and keep the surroundings neat and tidy also.

Thats what I do with mine, and it looks very impressive

;-)
actually mam its my bell that makes an impression,i don't have a knob to show off.. :-)
Mam, I think there are legal implications behind bringing in an outside-contractor for the sole purpose of knob-rubbing
Bobs obviously very, very good at DIY : )

T-Cut will be really hard work ... It only takes off microns in thickness.
Bob i may i just say i think mam`s knob gets plenty of fresh air it is in fact attached to her street door? is that correct, mam although my knob is attached to the one at home lol
Question Author
Oh no, it's not on the street that would be too common, I have a grand entrance hall (sort of atrium) so it is hard to see why my knob has become so discoloured, I see you are all too delicate to address my knocker issue, so I can see the only solution is a master craftsman or of course new accoutrements.

Thankyou for all your advice, and am sorry someone got removed here. Things are looking much shinier now, as you say a bit of elbow grease works wonders. Kettle on methinks.

Filthy sods, the lot of you....
Mamya, to return to so-called sanity, I remember Kim and Aggie coated tarnished brasswork with mayonnaise, left it a few minutes, then took it off with soapy water and polished it with a soft cloth. Came up a treat.
There used to be a franchise within Jenners Dept. Store in Edinburgh called 'Knobs & Knockers' It's juvenile I know but it never failed to amuse me when I wandered past lol
I agree a good rub should make it shiny :)
Question Author
Oh will give the Mayo a try.

NoM I think there may have been a misunderstanding re the topic of my query, I cannot think why.
