I thought lung worm was contracted from slugs and snails. I suppose if a pheasant had eaten an infected slug then it could happen. Is there a problem Jules?

Not with mine thankfully, a friends dog. They do have a lot of slugs around in the garden, and the vet has said the dogs only have to put their nose to where the slugs trail is to catch lungworm, but the dog did kill and eat a pheasant some months ago, and hasnt been right since, so we were just wondering.

Learnt something in the process though, the worming tablets we were both using do not treat lungworm, and you either have to use Panacur Liquid or Milbemax.
Thanks Jules. My big boy doesn't seem interested in slug/snail trails and doesn't eat anything he isn't given. I could drop a piece of steak on the floor and he wouldn't eat it until I picked it up and gave it to him. Good tip about the Panacur, I'll make sure we get the liquid next time rather than the wheelbarrow full of powder we normally need.. You going to LKA?
Question Author
Yep should be at LKA all being well, only my little girl entered though. Are you?
Question Author
Out of interest, the vet has said if a pheasant was infected, the dogs need only sniff the poo to catch the lungworm. Also found a cheaper site to buy Panacur in bulk if you have a number of dogs, or a large breed.

Thanks for the link for wormer. Should save us a fortune. We're at LKA on Sunday 13th. Last show at PG as I'm beginning to feel like a bandit. Manchester and Crufts will be limit. See you on the 13th?

oops, glad you said, I thought it was Saturday 12th! Good luck, hope to see you there.
jules, please tell me you don't use Milbemax for your collies, it can be lethal for any of the collie breeds as it contains macrocyclic lactones and is part of the ivermectin group of drugs. You can get a DNA test to see if they carry the MDR1 gene though and if they are clear it is ok to use.
I am entered at LKA on the Sunday.
Woohoo all of us together. Anyone else going? How about Fredpuli?
We'll have to arrange a time to meet up. I've got a hilarious little story to tell you, but it will keep till then(!)
Curious already. Looking forward to seeing you soon.

Sorry, only just caught up with this thread. No Lankeela, I dont use Milbemax, even though the vet reckons it is safe, I wont use anything with 'ectin on the end! I had thought of having them all tested for the MDR gene, but there are plenty of other drugs to use without resorting to anything related to ivermectin.

You may be interested in an article Dr Sharon Vanderliip wrote on MDR, as she is great friends with Dr Mealey that found the gene.

Very interesting, I have passed this on to a Border Collie group I am on.
