depends on what type of shrub it is and what shape you want. A more descriptive question would help for a better answer.
For a rose, if you want it goblet shape, take out the centre stems and cut outward pionting nodes i/4" above the cut mid-march.
That`s 1/4" not i/4"

think its a hebe, small green leaves with mauve lilac-shaped flowers in spring. A ball shape or a duck would be good?
