Are 'Gold' crested newts the same as 'greater' crested newts? - if so are they an endangered species/protected?

I suspect the "Gold" is a local name. The three types of newt found in Brittain are
1 The Palmate Newt, which is the smallest native amphibean
2 The Common or Smooth Newt
3 The Greater Crested Newt often known as a Warty. because of its lumpy skin
All three species are protected
