I am moving soon and want to give the carpets a good clean, mostly from cat related dirty paws by the door and such and when I've had workmen trudging in and out.

Can anyone recommend a good off the shelf cleaner which doesn't cost the earth?

Have considered hiring a carpet cleaner but I don't drive so collecting and returning one would be tricky and want something to go over them now and again after moving (in case of movers with dirty feet, anything which needs cleaning under furniture etc...).

Any suggestions welcome :)

go to morrisons or b and q i know you dont want to hire a cleaner, but where you can hire rug doctor cleaners there they also have a range of carpet cleaning materials which are very good hand held sprays ect i swear by them
lakeland and chemdry both do a metal canister (like a small fire extinguisher) of spray foam which are great for cleaning small areas. i've found that the vanish ones, whilst removing the stain, leave a 'bright' spot on the carpet because they contain brighteners.
