Fertilizing cabbages during the head formation s the primary cause of heads splitting... Additionally, moisture fluctuations during heading will cause maturing heads to split open. Try to keep the soil moist with mulch (we use layers of old newspapers) and provide a tleast two inches of water per week...
A good tip when planting brassicas is to really firm them in, especially brussles sprouts and cauliflowers. I tread on them with my boots.
