Removing sticky stuff

Just bought set of stainless steel canisters and can't get rid of sticky stuff left by label. Tried cooking oil and neat washing-up liquid but it won't budge. Any ideas?

Nail Varnish Remover pads, or nail varnish remover liquid on a cotton wool ball, or folded (small) kitchen roll tissue.
You can also buy small plastic bottles, which are called, "Sticky Stuff Remover", I bought mine from our local post office. Hope this helps.
lighter fluid, then rub or scrape.... dont set fire to it though!!
I tried everything on a metal based lamp but the thing that finally did the trick was WD 40. Give it a squirt, leave for a minute & it wipes off.

I agree with Robinia.I have used W D Oil for many years and I guarantee it works perfectly on the toughest of sticky label glues
White spirit or turpentine substitute (the stuff used to wash out oil based paint from brushes) will quickly dissolve the glue - just put a tiny amount on a piece of kitchen paper and rub the paper over the glue.
Just to add to my last answer. W D 40 is also excellent to polish any stainless apliance etc.

Thank you for all your answers. The local hardware bloke suggested white spirit which worked brilliantly, but I've taken note of all the other suggestions for future reference. Many thanks, Liz.
Hairspray! Works every time! Spray a wee bit on and rub gently with a clean dry cloth
