I have an electric chainsaw, I'm aware that at some point it will need sharpening, I've bought a "universal" sharpener from B&Q but am wondring if its really the tool for the job, would I be better off purchasing the recomended manufacturers sharpening kit or it it not much of a problem, chain saw chains are something a bit new to me I can underdtand how a handsaw would be sharpened with appropriate files but these are a different thing

A made for the purpose round file, mounted in a file guide will give a good result if used correctly. Its not too difficult. Find your nearest agricultural equipment supplier in the yellow pages(if you're in the south east E Doe are excellent) take them your saw, they will be very helpful, sell you the correct size file and probably show you how to do it!
landscaper, as usual has given good advice, but, if you choose to learn to sharpen it yourself, you'll need a good flat file for attending to the nicks and gouges in the guides as well. These are the flat sections of the chain that keep the chain cutting straight and true...
Best of luck!
