Due to the weather we're having.... our walls have been suffering badly. Mould and mildew (due to condensation) is appearing all over the place...

Yes I know you can buy special paint and dettol spray but they're not doing the trick so would appreciate your home made solutions...... I've heard that green tree oil and water is supposed to be good?

Anyone having the same problem?

Dya mean Tea Tree Oil Chris?
Question Author
Sorry I mean tea tree oil...
Good ventilation is supposed to help, and i find Dettol Mould + Mildew Remover spray is good for bathroom tiles and shower curtain xx
If you don't sort out your, apparently(by your description), severe lack of ventilation you'll always be getting the problem back until it's irreparable
Hi,

First and foremost, your home must be ventilated.

If you have all the windows and doors closed for long periods of time, you will experience a build up of condensation caused by, running a bath or shower, cooking, boiling water for tea etc. etc. etc.

Start by opening your windows and doors and have a good change of air, do this regularly and things should improve. Sometimes wall insullation can help, however I would start with the above and take it from there.

I have had numerous problems with mould at numerous rented properties over the years, and yes I too have used dettol mould an midew remover and dehumidifiers. At the current property, leaks round the property caused mould spots all over most rooms so a used the dettol spray to wash down the walls, that was last xmas I have only last week noticed it had come back and retreated some walls.

But I have found opening the curtains more have helped alot we are very private people who live in quite a public area where nosey people can look inside our windows so we kept the curtains closed alot. I have now put up nets on tension rods (so I dont have to drill) and I keep the curtains open all day with just the net up to stop people looking in. I have drip feeds for ventilation built into the windows which I keep in the open position always. I cannot open the windows much because there are no security locks and im never at home. The day light is what stops the mould regrowing after the treatment. The darkness is what the mould loves so take it away and as much as possible ventilate by open drip feeds and opening windows even for a couple of mins.

I also leave the bathroom door shut during and after showers and set the extractor fan the stay working longer after the light is turned off.

I dont dry any clothes naturally in the house but hang them outside if I cannot put them in the tumble drier.
