house exteior

hi all, the front of my standard size two bed terrace house is in need of decorating. the existing paint is peeling off and some brick work is in need of replacement at the top of the house. i have damp starting to come through in small patches in one of the front rooms and one of the backrooms either side of the house. im just really trying to get some sort of idea on the cost this work can be?

It's not really possible to give a cost on curing the damp problems (you don't say whether it's upstairs or downstairs rooms). The possible causes could be:
1) Rising damp - your house may not have a damp course if it's old or it may have perished.
2) Damaged lead flashings
3) Damaged roof / roofing felt leading to wated penetrating the cavity between the inside and outside walls
4) Defective pointing between bricks
5) Cracked stonework (cills & lintols) above and below windows or pointing around the windows
6) Rotten windowframes leading to water ingress to the cavity between inside and outside brickwork.

I would estimate that the external redec' would be about £500 to £750 based on 1 days preparation + 1.5 days to repaint plus materials & rent of scaffold tower, depending where you live and the size of the house.

the damp is coming through on the upstairs. it sounds like i could have a number of those issues. im just wondring as im getting companies coming round offering work to the sum of £7000-£8000 to re do and paint the front. is this a job that can be done by myself? my dads willing to help as he has experience in buying properties and knows a few builders

Then please use your Dad's experience and contacts. The damp is likely to be coming from the guttering leaking, though it may be the tiles/felt not holding out the water (more serious to put right).
Knocking single bricks out and replacing them is a time-consuming job and costs. The redecoration is relatively easy.
