My kitchen walls are in need of urgent re-plastering.They are tatty with coats of paint,what is the best preparation to ensure the new coat of plaster will adhere well? Thanks

it is usual to chip all the old plaster off. a very long job unless it is all dry and crumbly.you could batten and plasterboard the wall, I have seen this done over some really rotten walls. you lose a couple of inches of room, but it is a alternative to hard, messy work.

Thanks for that,I know that you are talking about losing only a couple of inches but the kitchen is of the galley type and losing space is something we are continually fighting agaist.But it is an option to consider.Thanks again.

other alternative is to make sure the wall is level, fill in any holes, then stick 1/2" plaster board straight onto the wall ( glue it) .skim it over with a couple of mil thick plaster ( excuse the imperial / metric bit ) and you have a perfect wall., only fractionally larger than before., or, knock out the bad stuff and fll in the holes, sand it down until you are happy with it, and job done. wear a mask, and cover everything up.
