Is there a comprehensive UK-based list of the GI of foods online? I keep coming up with American ones which have odd breads, cereals and grains and other stuff that we don't generally eat on this side of the pond.

I don't know about 'comprehensive', but if you click here, that will link you to a web-page with helpful lists which appear to be British-based.
Make sure you use google.co.uk, when you're looking when you search. As a brief overview, though. Potatoes, most pasta, white rice, white bread and all associated white flour products are high. Almost all fruit and veggies are low, with the exception of cooked carrots. however, you 'can' eat wholemeal pasta, rice and bread, and spaghetti is also considered OK, because it's 'unforced' pasta. Good pasta substitutes are things like chickpeas, beans, lentils. If you do stick to the GI diet, you'll find yourself feeling a hell of a lot better, I guarantee.
