Do you have a heated greenhouse?
Question Author
no greenhouse - I was wondering what is the earliest I could plant any veg into soil?
You need to get garlic and shallots in asap. They need a cold blast to get them to start to divide.

It may be a bit cold right now but do it as soon as you can and hopefully you'll get another cold spell.

They say to plant on the shortest day of the year and harvest on the longest

Thanks jake-the-peg
Where would I purchase garlic and shallots?

You might be a touch late at your local garden centre - but they might still have some.

I put my Garlic in the week before Christmas - I ordered a mixed pack from these people

That might be a bit much for you - it was enough for just over a raised bed 3m x1.5

But you can order individually

Mind you the Elephant Garlic has to be seen to be believed looks like they're out of stock for this year but each clove was about the size of a table tennis ball
