Do plants need a period of darkness for them to grow properly? Or would they just keep growing if exposed to light 24 hours per day?

no and yes. Though i imagine it may damage certain plants. Marijhuana plant growers put their plants under permanent lights to encourage faster growth. please note that MJ growing is illegal in the UK and Darth doesn't advocate it. ()
consider another example - alaska, canada, scandinavian countries etc experience months of the year with constant sunshine (then months of the year with no sunshine at all) and yet plants manage to survive there :-)
