All of my pot plants have become infected with strange soil-bound bugs. You can't see these bugs until you water the flowers and then they appear as tiny moving white specks swimming around in the water. What are they, will they harm my plants and how can I get rid of them without resorting to chemical insecticides?

Are they little white grubs, about 1in long? If so it is vine weevil and you need to treat it immediately as they devour roots and bulbs. There is a soluble treatment now available in garden centres.
