Black spots

Black spots have appeared on my windowsill, furniture and now bedlinen! They can be wiped clean, but what is causing this?

Dampness.
how big are the spots? do you mean pinhead size? if so it's probably spider poo - sorry if you don't like spiders......
Mold.
Small black spots could be fly droppings
This sounds like mould caused by dampness. Try putting a dish of salt in your window bottom or buy some absorbing crystals (wilcos I think). They do work better.Try to air the room well by opening a window.

I've just moved into a bungalow, and there were several spiders, craneflies and beetles (still trying to get rid of them!), so that must be it as there isn't any dampness or mould.

Yuk - I hate spiders!
If they simply wipe away and are not solid then its likely the condensation is causing mould. De humidifier will also help
