I've made many a water or drinks stain disappear by mixing cigarette ash into a paste with a good vegetable oil, and gently rubbing onto the mark.
NB.This is only for dark wood - use a Brazil nut for light wood.
Hi Phil ... From what you say I would think that water has got into the varnish. As Cetti says try cigarette ash and oil .. it really does work. Ronseal sell something that does the same thing but cigarette ash and oil works just as well. Start rubbing the stain in a circular motion from the outside to the inside and do it gently .. it will take a while to remove it so keep on doing it.
