does anyone know the best way and time of year to prune back a fatsia japonica? Also, can this plant be grown in semi-shady conditions?

I think my old boiler is broke :-(

You can probably cut it back anytime to shape it or keep it under control. The best time would be March but i would certainly not worry about doing it now.

Fatsia would be fine in semi shade.
