Can anyone recommend a good way to go about getting a cleaner ? I don't want to answer an ad in the local shop as you just don't know who people are these days. Any advice ?

You could ask around in your local area. In the village I live in (of about 600 houses) there are two cleaners who always seem to have loads of work.
Well if you are worried about using a private person you could always use an agency and then you don't have the embarrassment of either sacking or haggling over money etc. Molly Maids is a national chain I think. Also a proper cleaning agency would be fully insured.

Thanks, I'll give them a go. Would like to use someone local but I'm in London and it's difficult. No-one around me uses a cleaner otherwise I'd be happy to use local resources.
i would definately go with an agency as they are fully insured against damages and thefts etc and all their cleaners are vetted etc. Also, you tend to always get the same cleaner everyweek so they get faster as they used to your house.

I found a local agency using yell.com. They have been brilliant and I haven't looked back. They are so reliable.

good luck with your quest.
