My first serious effort at growing outdoor aubergines this year. Should I limit the number of flowers on the plant or fertilise them generously and let them all grow freely?

Hi WendyS, Aubergines really do better under glass, but you may be successful if we have a long hot summer. When 5 fruits have formed, remove lateral shoots and remaining flowers, pick when fruits are about 5 inches long, but before surface shine has gone, dull fruit are usually over-ripe and bitter. Good luck. H.

Many thanks Horty. Knew I was taking a bit of a risk but have grown peppers on a sunny patio for years with success so will keep my finger crossed with the aubergines. Apart from like the vegetables, the plants have such pretty flowers, so it's two for the price of one.
