I want to plant clematis in a patio trellis--I can put the planter in my unheated garage or a shed during the winter. Do I need to provide water during the dormant period--

Hi, no need to put a clematis in the garage for the winter, it should survive perfectly well in a pot on the patio, you don't need to water it if you live here in Britain, watch out for slugs and snails on the new growth in spring, they can get into pots no problem, and love new clematis growth.
Hi Dvdre! It depends entirely on what clematis you have, where in the world you live, and to a certain extend what pruning group it is. All plants still grow over winter even if they die back so will need a bit of water. Most clematis are hardy but there are some that require protection over winter - Florida Sieboldii for example.
