problem with a patio heater

i have a new patio heater. have a full cylinder of gas all connected the pilot is sparking but the heater won't light. can anyone help please

I know this is very basic, but have you checked to see if the gas valve is on? If so, try lighting it with a match or one of the small butane "candle lighters"... perhaps the igniter is not actually sparking, even though it sounds like it...
