I know in the olden days, they used to 'fish' them. This involved cutting one end of the break to resemble a wedge, and the other to resemble a 'V'. The two would then slot together and have wet rope 'whipped' round the join to secure it. As the rope dried, it tightened. Don't know what they do now.
