what does one do with old school books besides dumping them or handing them into second hand shops?

One gives them to one's servants to dispose of.

give them to the school to pass on to the new pupils


or donate to the library

perhaps an overseas charity (Oxfam etc) may have a use for them in schools in poorer countries?
