Not sure of the breakdown of costs but our water meter has saved me about 8.00 per month.

Page 7 of the Daily Mail today has a very useful breakdown of the costs of metered water:
Flushing the loo 2 - 3 gallons - 2-3p

Taking a bath 18-22 gallons - 15 - 28p

Shower 7-10 gallons 6-8p

Washing machine 11-29 gallons 9 - 24p

dishwasher load - 3-11 gallons 3-9p

Brushing teeth - 2-6 gallons 2-6p

Hose or sprinkler half hour 59-178 gals - 52 - 1.49p

Washing car with hose - 13-29 gals - 12-24p

Quite an eye opener really! Doesnt sound much until you add it all up.

rosyrussell that is frightening..especially if you add it up over 6 months..
In many foreign countries, many of which are our favourite spots for tourism, drinking water is bought bottled or in large plastic containers.
If water isn't going to be used solely for drinking then why does our mains supply need to be of such high quality? Surely recycled or desalinated water could be used instead and avoid the need for metering.
I think the risk with water metres is if there is an underground leak; it could take months before you notice it and even then the water company will be in no hurry to fix it because they know you have to pay for the water... and probaby fix it at your expense.
If you have a houseful dont bother. if you are on your lonesome go ahead
