I used to have a book on useless information and that stated it was true.

Another gem I remember was that there were more miles of canal in Birmingham than in Venice, but I don't know whether that was true.

I'm not sure but I think it's just one of those facts used to demonstrate the relative safety of flying.

I doubt that there are actuall accurate statistics on Donkey Kicks deaths. I had a quick google but couldn't find anything conclusive.
