Is it important which way up weed compressor material is laid down - silver or black?

I'm almost certain it doesn't matter which way up it is. The important thing is to make sure you put enough down. I'd put 2 layers down if you can, or at the very minimum, make sure you overlap any joins so there are no gaps.
Mine was black on both sides, but it works a treat. I put it down all around the borders in our back garden, with a layer of pebbles on top and plant pots all around. We still get the occasional weeds, but they don't penetrate the membrane, they just take root in the pebbles themselves and are dead easy to pull up. It's not zero maintenance, but it's as close as it could be :)
