Probably after being sick of liquid soap dispensers etc during covid I have taken the retro step and now like to keep old fashioned well scented bar soaps by the basin. Although I put them on a dish after a few weeks they get big cracks in and look 'grubby'. Is their a hack to stop them splitting in this way?

It sounds to me as though you don't actually use them very often and so they dry out and split. We use tablet soap and use it every day (whether we need it or not!) and it stays nice and smooth and moist. What I'm not keen on is the jelly that can accumulate in the soap dish.
i have a metal soap dish with gaps in bottom and i put a scrubbing brush (wooden with bristles both sides )in dish and put the soap on top of bristles ,no more goo .i use soap every day so no cracks .
Strangely enough leave the bars unwrapped in a drawer for a while so they dry out a bit before they go into the bathroom. Then turn them over every time you use them
Or treat yourself to a pretty soapbox with a lid, ( a butter dish does the same job)

I use it every day, at least twice if not 3 or 4 times, they don't dry out or get slimy but they do get cracks. I will look at maybe a different way of keeping it, mine just sits on a ceramic flat dish.
A mistake could see the breakfast toast in the bin though.
Life is full of problems. B&Q filler? :>)
I always used Chateau du Savon soaps they never seemed to crack and they are fabulously scented. The jasmine and rose are glorious.
I think it depends on the soap. Some crack and some don't (or not so quickly) I`ve got a travel soap (Elemis) that has been going for ages and hasn't cracked although that is in a soap box so I don't know if that makes a difference.
Give up. Buy liquid soap.
I find that liquid soap leaves my hands slimy however much I try to rinse.
I buy liquid soap, but use Dove on my face, but OT has good old fashioned soap, not perfumed. His soap always looks grimy!! Hes always doing dirty work. We have separate bathrooms! I might try the scrubbing brush idea for his soap.
My Dove leaves lots of gunge in the soap dish.
What about buying smaller bars, like guest soaps?
