I have recently purchased a new hotpoint fridge and for the last couple of days I have traced a nasty smell in the kitchen to the back of the fridge . Can anyone tell me what might be causing this

First thing, if it's a self-defrosting freezer/fridge combination, is to look under the unit, usually behind the vent grid and (with a pair of rubber gloves) pull out the overflow pan. This, at least here in the U.S. is the plastic pan that the automatic defrost feature drains into. No one checks these with any regularity and the stuff that grows in them are your worst nightmare... Secondly, the plsatic "baskets" in the bottom part that are supposed to hold meat and vegtables tend to acquire odors. These are nothing like what you describe, but wash them in a laundry bleach/water mixture before returning them to the fridge. Good luck!

Ooops, on rereading your post, I see that the unit is new. I would certainly call the dealer/seller about the problem. The gas used in the unit for the cooling is, usually, not detectable by odor, but the newer ones in use now may be. That, and perhaps something as simple as a mouse or other "livestock" has gotten into the compressor area during the shipping and storage before it was sold to you. Best of luck!
