Washing Black Jeans

I put some washing in earlier, including two pairs of black jeans. I always turn them inside out before putting them in the washer , as per washing instructions label. I don't know what difference it makes. The water and the washing powder still get on the inside (outside).

Does it make a difference or should I not bother?

I can't tell you why, Tilly, but I do know that I have an old pair of black jeans that have always been washed as they're worn and are now faded to light grey but the inside still has colour so whatever the reason, wash as instructed would be my advice.
I would hope it did get both sides. Wouldn't wash very well if it didn't. My woman also turns things inside-out to wash. I have no idea why.

Surely the only reason to take care is the possibility of poor dye getting into the water and getting to other things ? After a few washes or add a special colour catch item) and that ought not be an issue.

In your shoes I'd just wash it and blow messing about.
Sounds like the inside of your jeans have never been washed properly Doug.
Denim jeans are washed inside out because of the way they are woven/dyed. It reduces the amount of the dye that is removed during each wash....low temperatures also help to reduce fading.
Tilly...have you had any black jeans recently? Because the dye on them is a pain in the neck. If you are in a shop selling them....just rub your hands on them + you will have a black hand! The do have a warning sticker on them about it, but don't sit on a light coloured sofa or chair before you've washed them a couple of times ;)

I find its better to wash them inside out as not the washing but drying them on the line that can fade them especially if the sun is out .

What is raw denim ? Can you get cooked denim ?
You may have a point. I reckon the original 49ers who first used jeans as hardwearing working clothes, probably didn't wash then too often.

Baths, I do buy charity shop clothes but, having done some voluntary work in the local Barnardos one, I always wash things thoroughly before I wear them.

Some of the donated clothes were unspeakable horrible.

When I was a student, I had two pairs of Levi's. I had to decide each morning which were the cleanest dirty pair.

I took them home to be washed at the end of the term.
Lol Tilly! I bet they were men's jeans, or are you perhaps not as ancient as me, but I remember when they didn't sell jeans for girls ;)

They were men's jeans, Baths. 28 inch waist, I seem to remember. You had to get a big waist size to get them over your hips. A belt was essential.

Mallyh. That's a good point about the sun. No danger of that today, though.
yep Tilly, 28 waist is correct,...and me + 1st one used to share a couple of pairs, but I had to have some with longer leg than him, to wear with ginormus platform shoes...
