House Brick Measurement?

Daft question but OH has made a wooden drain cover to keep a "mini" cuppa from trying to catch the water!!

I thought my eye measurement of 1 brick and a half wide was fairly accurate..so told him 11 inch square would be fine.

Now he's finished it and bought it in from the shed to deliver tomorrow it doesn't look anywhere near as big as I suggested.

oppps not going to be very popular if it doesn't fit.
