Have a look at the G-Tech
I like the Henry.....
Hi Margo, is it just an average household load you're hoovering up? Do you have pets?
We've got the Miele Cat and Dog ,although we no longer have a dog.
Powerful cleaner .All attachments on board .
Dt, the Henry is the type of vac we are supplied with to use in the University. Good vac with good suction.
Margo, you need a long hose to go up stairs then the Henry isn't suitable. As the hose isn't long enough.

No pets Elina (unless you count my son!) I haven't got anywhere convenient to power up a cordless cleaner unfortunately. I am trying to find something light enough to carry up the stairs easily.
I quite like the Bissell range Margo. They are very economical, have easy emptying of the cyclone and great suction.Never had such a good hoover before thoroughly recommend it.
I only have experience of the gtech & Henry Margo. Over to anyone else that can help! x

Thank you all very much for your suggestions I shall now do some further research - it's always good to have personal recommendations.
I find that no matter what make you get most of them suck :-)
I've had a torrid time working my way through various vacuum cleaners, including Dyson, Hoover and Panasonic. None of them were much good. At last I've got a really good one that I can thoroughly recommend - the Bosch Athlet. It's bagless, cordless and re-chargeable and very powerful. Also pretty light. Currently on special offer at Argos, £50 less than the John Lewis price that I paid. About the only weakness is the smallish size of the removeable dust container.

Thanks Dustypuss (v funny) and Michealmph. Looks like I'll be spending the afternoon looking at all these.
I've got a hoover for sale. It's just sat in a cupboard gathering dust:-)
