lute is at the end of the word, thus,'instrument in retirement'.
I'm just wondering whether arjay has typed 21 a correctly, because the end of the clue above (19a) also ends in 'in retirement' which seems unusual.

The clue to 21a is Rose playing ancient instrument in set. Not in retirement.
