It's all about superstition.

Magpies - 1 for sorrow / 2 for Joy / 3 for a girl / 4 for a boy.

If u seen a certain amount of magpies, and something relating to that number happened to happen .. u would automatically start thinking the superstition is true .. human nature isn't it.

Personally .. I dont think the bird was trying to tell u anything .. just unfortunate timing methinks.

I've had 2 magpies in my garden for weeks, but am I joyful? Nope. Same old grouch.

There is another version of the old rhym.....

1 for sadness, 2 for mirth, 3 for marriage, 4 a birth, 5 for laughing, 6 for crying, 7 for sickness, 8 for dying, 9 is silver, 10 is gold, 11 is a secret never to be told.

No.
I think the magpie was probably a Banshee. they're an irish tradition/myth, usually assocaited with a woman wailing before the death of a family member, but they have also taken the shape of a bird, eg crow. i'v never heard of a magpie, but i have had a similar experience with a crow. one appeared at a window in our house, tapping on it for the 5 nights before my gran died (she had also experience of the Banshee), when she passed away the crow dissappeared. nothing similar has happened since!
