ours our mains run with no battery
what does the manual say about this?
Hard wired, but has batteries ?.
Might be run by batteries with a mains recharge / back up ?

Sounds like a fault, you may need to replace them. Or the faulty one at least. I take it they each signal the other if they detect an issue ?
Think they may need replaced, they apparently have a finite life span.
the hardwired ones have a battery back up usually.
ps paul, you are not on fire are you?
What make are they?..it sounds like the detection chamber on one or both needs cleaning out..try blowing into it...how old are they?
My wife and I were awakened last night at 3am with our newly inserted smoke alarms by the local fire service bleeping but no smoke anywhere, and they wonder why some people take the darn batteries out.
After turning off the power supply, remove the top and you'll find what's known as a "target"... it's a smallish (maybe 1 1/2 inches in diameter) shiny, stainless steel cup about 1/2 inch deep. This device reacts to smoke particles to warn one of a fire. It occasionally needs cleaning since it also collects common dust. Just use a tissue and gently wipe the inside of it out. Don't use any liquids such as window cleanre... just a dry tissue...
