I'm not sure, but if it was ironed on, could it be ironed "off"? Failing that put a big square of material on the back to cover the offensive letters maybe. Or ask at shop where it was bought.

What about putting a damp cloth over the letters etc and pressing a hottish iron on the top and see if that will remove them? Alternatively, could you ask at the shop where the shirt was bought to see if they have any advice

I think under the circumstances I would take it back to the shop and see if they will replace it for you.
If it is the club shop they almost certainly will. |

Personally under the circumstances I think that the club should either replace, or give something against another shirt. I realise the club didn't cause the jailing of one of its players, but this is a child who has already discovered his hero has feet of clay. I am led to believe though that once letters have been put onto the shirt, no refunds can be given. In a normal situation I can see why but these are unusual circumstances.

Get iron on inkjet transfer paper and print a sheet the same colour as the shirt and iron over the offending letters if the shop won't change it
Shame they sold it in the first place knowing the trial was going to happen they could at least have quietly warned the adult buying the shirt |

If the club shop wont change it say you will contact the press and cause a fuss.
They wont like the bad publicity and will probably change it to keep you quiet. |
