Re-potting orchids

My mother in law has a beautiful orchid that has now produced a mass of what look like thick green twisted shoots (or perhaps roots?) from beneath the compost. She has had the plant for a couple of years and it is thriving. She asked me whether she should re-pot it, but since I know nothing about indoor plants (or outdoor plants!), I thought I'd ask someone who might.

I am of the dont fix what aint broken school of thought but if she does want to repot it, get specialist orchid compost and go up no more than one pot size.

I never could keep orchids but since keeping it in a tranparent pot the one i have now just flowers and flowers. Orchids don't live in soil in the wild so don't see the point in re-potting it myself. However, if the 'roots' are getting too big for the pot you could put it into a bit bigger one.

Depends on the type of orchid. If it is like the one in the film clip I wouldn't repot unless absolutely necessary. They feed from the air . If it is a bit loose in the pot she can top up with some small bark pieces or something like vermiculite. My cymbidiums I repot when they become pot bound and don't have any bark or planting medium left.
