Can you put a standard yale lock on an exterior gate, or will it rust?

There's no reason why you cant, although they are meant for internal use, giving just basic security.
The Yale night latch you have shown has an alluminium casing.
Just make sure you wipe some grease around the internal parts before you fit it.. all you need is a 32mm flat spade bit to drill the hole for the cylinder in the wooden gate. Once that's done you have completed the hardest part of the job.
Just make sure you give it a squirt of oil now and again, and it will be ok.
The main area will be to stop the cylinder rusting. Some of the internals are mild steel and there is the spring. I expect these would rust too if not looked after.
