Does your consumer unit(fuse box) have circuit breakers?
Question Author
oops - I have no idea - how would I know/tell ?
Mojay, changing the fuse or circuit breakers usually a simple DIY job. Your cost is going to come from changing the cable. I guess you have a 30A fuse or 32A MCB with a 6mm cable. Unless you're very close to the fuse board, I expect you'll need a 10mm cable.
You will need someone to check this for you. It's impossible to quote, I'm afraid, because there are so many variables. |

Oh heck - I'm in sheltered housing and they've given me permission to change the hob at my expense. The fuse box is in an outside cupboard. Does this mean I should abandon this exercise.
I could return the hob - would I have this same problem with every type of hob. the one here at present is like something out of a timewarp from the '60's - sold black rings and looks very ancient. |

I don't understand your post about the fuse box being in an outside cupboard. Can you explain please?
I think there are induction hobs that can be run from a 32A MCB (miniature circuit breaker).
Let me have a poke about. ......... I'll be back ;o) |

I could be talking gobblydook but I assumed from what the builder said that I might need to have the wiring changed between the fusebox and the kitchen . |
Yes, that is what Builder was talking about. My question still remains. I have never heard of a fuse box in an outside cupboard.

Ideally, you should swap yours for another at Comet, but they don't seem to give the power ratings. Ask them for a unit that can be connected to a 30 or 32A supply (have a look in the cupboard to see what you have).
Or .............. Google for something like this..... http://direct.asda.co...-In%20Induction%20Hob |

Question Author
Oh wow - would that Beko hob be suitable ?
It is quite common in sheltered accommodation for the meter and fusebox to be in a lockable cupboard accessed from outside the property (either in a common corridor or an outer wall).
Absolutely Mojay ............ connects to a 30A supply. It's a standard 60cm x 60cm size........... that's all you need to check
Is that right, Canary? That's interesting. You'd be rather stuffed if a breaker or a trip goes though ;o(
Wardens and Maintenance have access to it.
