Eco combi boiler

I have a combi boiler with an eco button. The manual advises me to open a tap and shut it then open it and let run for more economy. I have noticed that if I open the tap and let it run (like I did with the old boiler) the boiler makes a different sound to when I've opened then shut and opened again. Does anybody know why and what the boiler is actually doing?

Is it a Worcester Greenstar HE?
When the Eco button is not on, the boiler continually heats a small tank of water to reduce the time it takes for hot water to reach your tap.
You are just hearing difference between sending through pre-heated water, and water heated on demand.

Thank you AlBags for the explaination. That sums up what the manual says as by putting it on eco the water isn't getting heated up all day long. It's an ELM Leblanc

Hi there eth. Thank you so much for your wishes. I'm off to my sister's family in England tomorrow for a week so won't be on my own. I wish you and Ron a good Christmas too and hope you have plans for France in 2012.
thanks for your good wishes coccinelle, hope you have a lovely time with your sister and family over the christmas period.
oh yes, we have some french plans for 2012, wouldn't be the same without at least one extended trip across the channel. we're pondering tarn gorges and then eastern med coast in may/june, neither are areas we know at all so hopefully it should be an interesting trip.
take care,
eth x
