It seems to be working OK for me.

If, by the 'combo box' you mean the box at the top left, I wonder whether your screen reader is handling it correctly. Clicking on the word 'Books', for example, doesn't actually do anything. Placing the mouse cursor over that word opens up a sub-menu to the right of the main box, with links to 'Books', 'Kindle eBooks'), 'Books for Study', etc.

Perhaps it's another example of a website which hasn't been designed with the needs of those with visual impairment in mind?

The drop-down menu, to the right of the word 'Search', enables you to select a particular department to search within (by entering your search term in the field to the right of that menu). Perhaps that might be of more use to you?

Many Thanks Chris, but amazon is usually good and works well with my screen reader, but every now and then....? I've no idea where things are on the screen, I just go through my usual routine and if it dunner work, then I'm scuppered and my scup has never been so perred!...smile.

Well Prudie, I was thinking of buying a life size doll of G W Bush and feeding it to my pet crocodile, but then I thought what a waste of money and anyway, Crockers wouldn't stomach it, so I'm going to have a pearl-encrusted face sauna to try and stimulate my beard...gotta have it nice and neat for my gig!

Sorry to intrude and be "off subject" but could you please tell me what a screen reader is? I'm visually impaired but enlarge the text with CTRL and wheel mouse. However, have been trying to get a flat screen monitor magnifier but having no luck, and can't see to play my "hidden object adventure" games. So would a screen reader be any good? Is it a disc program or a physical thing? Hope someone can give me some advice. Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi Maxim, I'm a techno-duffer, so I don't know the techy bits, but my screen reader uses speech software which is loaded onto/into the hard drive and then I can access almost everything you can see on the screen, but this is mainly characters, i.e. text, numbers etc. It can't, as far as I know, identify or read graphics or any other kind of visuals; it will announce they are there, but can't access them. I can also navigate around a screen and/or site, but it is all text based. I hope this is some kind of help to you.

Thank you both for your help. There are clip on monitor magnifiers on line for about £180 but not for my size screen, only 15" and I would imagine you have to have the right size and it isn't available in any shops, nor does it state the magnifying capabilities. The price of that software is unbelievable!! but Windows has a magnifier built in i.e. CTRL and forward roll of the mouse wheel which enlarges text and pictures on line to a very large size. It really gets me down the way they overcharge for disabled items across the whole field. I needed a basket for my small mobility scooter and they wanted £25 minimum, but I got a square small basket from Wilkinsons (supposed to be waste paper bin) for £3 and used cable ties to fix it on. Hi Maxim, at the time, my speech software was over £600 and I couldn't afford it, so I wrote a very detailed letter explaining why I needed the software and how it would improve my life and I sent it to my local charity 'groups' i.e. The Lions, Rotary Club, Round Table, etc and eventually I was able to receive the funding for the software and I've never looked back since!...mind you, I can't look forward either!...smile...why not try that approach?

Hi Woodelf, thanks for your answer. I contacted Social Services regarding other aspects of my disabilities and they helped me with ramps for mobility scooter, chair bath and handrails, for which I am eternally grateful but, at the time, my sight could be improved by spectacles. Now I am awaiting a retina scan at Moorfields in the hope they can find out why my near vision is deteriorating so fast, I've already had cataract removal from both eyes and do not have age related macular degeneration or Glaucoma (according to Moorfields) so will wait for the results of the scan and take it from there once a diagnosis has been made. I'm hoping they will point me in the right direction regarding visual aids. Thanks for all your help.
