How do you keep water out of a house?

Don't pay the water rates!

Does this help, or did you want a sensible answer?

tut tut Jonny!!! a sensible one plz
If the leak is on your land then you will have to pay. If the leak is coming from a pipe out in the street (for example) which isn`t on your land, the water board will have to pay for it.
think you will find that the leak is your responsibility fromyour property's boundry to the house sorry. If you are going looking for it your self then maybe you can hire a gadget that helps you locate the pipes fron your local hire shop and so keep the digging to a minimum
In our street it depends where the water comes in. Beyond the stopcock at our front gate it's the Water company - if it's my side of the stopcock, it's ours.
PS you might find that you have a manhole cover until your paving slabs - be careful, are you sure that it's clean water not sewage or drains?

I had a leak in my back yard but it was on the clean water intake to my sink, which also fed the houses on either side of me.
..^^ under your slabs

Where is the leak appearing? Up out of the ground in your garden or outside property?
