I love the tree, I want one, I can take cuttings from the one in the picture but I dont know what it is. I first thought it was a Willow but now I see it has fruit on it.

See pics.

Olive Tree ?
definitely Olive tree
The fruit are wrong for olive, olive fruits don't have the large flower remnant left on them. My guess would be a peach or similar.

edit: nectarine?

It looks very much like a weeping pear...Pyrus salicifolius pendula. Fruit, as far as i know, are ornamental and not edible
Question Author
No definitely not Olive.

I have worked in the house next to this tree for four years I have never seen the fruit before but I have never been so close, if the fruit stays that size, that would explain why I have never noticed the fruit before.

At the moment im going with the "weeping pear" the tree does get incredibly dense for a pear though, and if it is a pear I wouldn't be able to grow from a cutting I dont believe.

I will google and see what else I can come up with, many thanks, I will let you know what I find.

Woofgang, no not a nectarine, the leaves are wrong and it does not bear a citrus fruit of any description.
can't you just knock on the door and ask them?
Question Author
Thanks Hammerman, almost certainly a Weeping pear, what a lovely tree it is! unfortunately this beautiful tree may have to be felled, the company I work for has bought the house next door to demolish it and extend our existing home from 35 beds to 70 beds, it may be in the way. I just wish I could afford to have it moved to my garden :-(
Question Author
Sarah, the most obvious solution lol, I would but the house is occupied by the foreign staff that I work with, they are almost unaware of a tree being in their garden lol.
If you have a sample of the leaves etc, you could try this link.

Sarah.. *rolls eyes*
Question Author
Thanks Sara :-)
Almost certainly Willow leaved pear (Pyrus salicifolia) it is just like the picture in my book of European trees and it is a very large nice specimen. the fruit are globular 2cm diameter on a woolly stalk. Does that sound right?
Question Author
Yes jomifl spot on!! thanks.
I didn't want to sound too "yes it definately is" attitude but....yes, it definately is a weeping pear (Pyrus salicifolius pendula). I have one at work (Im a head gardener) and they are one of the more "identifiable" small trees.

You wont be able to grow them from cuttings....they're usually grafted onto a more suitable rootstock. They're lovely trees though.
Question Author
Thanks hammerman, im making inquiries to purchase one locally from a garden centre, if they can get one for me.
They should be able to...they're fairly common
Question Author
"Common" how very dare you!! you put me right off!!
LOL...ok, easy to get hold of (in a common way !!!) ;-)
