Who has my title deeds. I have just paid off my mortgage and I assumed that the Building Society I had my mortgage with would have my Title Deeds. They have not returned anythign to me but have told land registry that they nmo longer have an interest in the house. My question is does the mortgage provider always hold the deeds and isnt this something that the solicitor should have sorted when I bought the property? or isthe fact Land registry have me as the owner enough?

When we paid off our mortgage some 15yrs ago the Building Society wrote to us asking when we wanted to collect the dees etc, quite a large package which covered all the searches, change of owner etc since the bungelow was built. After having a quick look through them we deposited them in our bank who charge a yearly storage fee (£20.00p). I would have thought that your mortgage provider now having no interest n the property should have done the same thing with you and I would be inclined to chase them up a bit, If you are fully paid up the deeds are yours
deeds as proof of ownership no longer exist, its all online at the land registry here http://www.landregistry.gov.uk/

make sure you go to the .gov site as there are loads of others who look similar but are commercial. they will get the info off the land registry site and charge you their fees on top.

House title deeds can be very interesting bits of the history of your house, but as proof of ownership, they are now worth nothing.
edit: Our mortgage holder gave us ours back well before we had paid off the mortgage...it saves them storage. A mate of mine was asked by her mortgage holder whether she wanted them or should they destroy them.
since the land registry was set up there is no need for paper deeds - so as long as your interest is registered with the land registry there is nothing to worry about.
My Mum and Dad have paid all of their mortgage except for 1pence as the building society then keep the deeds for free in their safe and if anyone ever wants them they just have to pay 1 pence and the whole mortgage will be completly paid. This is what our solicitor suggested that we do.
HoneyB3, I'm curious, is interest charged on the 1 pence?
Hi. Just wondered if you ever got an answer to this question, as we are now in the same situation. Thanks. Sandy
Sandy, the answer is that if it's on the land registry there is no need for a paper deed any more.
